Promote the Game of Golf!

We started the club as a hand full of friends and our intention was to promote the game of golf by helping newer golfers obtain their first handicap and start competing. We also provided and still do provide a great value for those that just want to maintain their GHIN Handicap Number and be able to take advantage of the great discounted green fees at Poppy Hills and Poppy Ridge Golf courses.

We’ve had some larger tournaments of 16 to 30 players with some limited success to be honest. There is a bit of a recession these days and we’ve been approached by other clubs to merge with since they are also having trouble filling out tournaments. After discussing with members of the club the decision was to keep our separate identity and maintain our current path of growing the club from within. I do believe there is an opportunity in all this to run a fun club with opportunities for the members to compete against one another.

Crazy Eights (or twelves, or more)!

The club will be taking advantage of our discounts at Poppy Hills and Poppy Ridge to book back to back foursomes 30 days in advance and have 8-Man Match Play events that will include groups skins. This will also make it easy for players to have additional Nassau, Four-ball, and other side bets.

Official NCGA Tournament software will be used. Scores will post as tournament scores for your handicap. Any potential NCGA representation in regional events will be based on these matches. We will also look at Coyote Creek Golf Club and Del Monte Golf Course as they have had some deals for booking 12 or more tee times and are great places to play.

I’m sure we’ll have the opportunity to add a larger event sometime during the year. Golf Course activity is way down and I’m contacted continuously by Tournament Directors to book events with them. I’ve added three members to the handicap committee this year to help run events and be a resource on the course for members to ensure they are playing by the rules and competing fairly. Getting them and the membership up to speed as well as a show of interest by the membership will determine when our next larger event will occur.

Poppy Hills - 8th Annual This Year

This will be our Eight Annual Birthday Bash at Poppy Hills. We have 20 spots reserved beginning at 9:30 AM on Saturday July 24th. We have stayed at Big Sur, Pebble Beach, and other surrounding areas in the past and I’m sure we’ll have a number of participants stay the weekend and have a good time. We’ve established a good relationship with the tournament director and expect to have a nice slot in late July for the foreseeable future. This is a special event and as the club grows we are looking to add similar events that are of significance and will be continued annually for purposes other than just golf.

Summary Statement

The primary purpose of any golf club is to promote the game of golf and provide opportunities for the members to play competitive golf. We also want to provide an option for those who have played enough that they are ready to compete but just have not had the opportunity or experience.
